The cold weather has arrived, and we want to ensure that APS students stay warm and safe. βοΈ
If your student needs warm clothing, please contact HOPE at (575) 430-0191 or email them at HOPE@alamogordoschools.org. βοΈβοΈ
The New Mexico Department of Health recommends the following actions for staying safe in case of a winter storm: π§€π§£
βͺοΈ Dress for the cold: Wear multiple layers, including hats, gloves, and scarves. Wool or synthetic fabrics are best as they retain heat even when damp.
βͺοΈ Limit outdoor exposure: Stay indoors as much as possible. If you must go outside, keep trips brief and avoid overexertion.
βͺοΈ Carbon monoxide precautions: Only use heating devices in well-ventilated areas. Avoid using grills, camp stoves, or generators indoors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Install CO detectors, where possible, and check batteries to ensure safety during power outages.
βͺοΈ Prepare for power outages: Have a flashlight, extra batteries, and enough food and water for a few days. Check that all necessary medical supplies are accessible and if reliant on electronic devices, such as CPAP machines for sleep apnea, that they are fully charged.
βͺοΈ Protect pets and pipes: Pets should be brought indoors during extreme weather. For pipes, keep indoor temperatures steady and open cabinets to allow any warm air to reach plumbing. Allow faucets to drip to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting, which is a common hazard during sustained cold.
βͺοΈ Vehicle preparedness: If travel is unavoidable, ensure your vehicle has winter-ready tires, a full tank of gas, blankets, food, and emergency supplies. Monitor road conditions via the New Mexico Road Advisory Hotline at 5-1-1 or https://nmroads.com.

π Please give a round of apple-ause to our wonderful APS Student Nutrition team! π
The APS Student Nutrition team was awarded $45,610 for the New Mexico Grown program for the 2024-25 school year. Last week, one of our local farms, Nichols Ranch and Orchards, delivered fresh Fiji apples to Alamogordo High School to be distributed to the rest of the schools. The apples π went from their farm to our schools in less than 24 hours, and boy, were they delicious. π€€
πSierra Elementary kitchen manager Kim Maynez mentioned that receiving local, freshly picked fruit with a better taste was great. The kids thought it was fantastic that the apples came from a farm they could recognize. With this grant, the APS Student Nutrition Department plans to purchase New Mexico beef and other fruits and vegetables from across the state. π₯¦
